Lubenice, the village suspended between sky and sea
An arrival beyond time
There is a precise moment when the road fades away…
when you no longer know if you are heading toward a place, or a feeling.
Lubenice begins exactly there.
A few tight bends, stone walls, almost nothing else.
And yet… in the middle of this almost nothing, an unexpected stop.
Mali Podol, an unexpected pause
Mali Podol.
Barely ten houses, placed there as if forgotten.
In the center, not really a square… just a tree planted like an improvised roundabout.
And right next to it, something you don’t expect here:
“Fig Ice Cream”.
Homemade ice cream with simple local flavors — fig, apple — finished with a drizzle of honey.
And to go with it, herbal drinks infused with mint, rosemary, sage…
An improbable pause, almost outside of time.
Then the road continues.
And suddenly, the landscape shifts.
Lubenice, a village on the edge
The village appears.
Clinging to the rock, suspended more than 350 meters above the sea.
Not impressive.
Not trying to impress.
Simply… there.
A few houses, a church, a bell tower quietly watching time pass.
And that silence.
A silence that doesn’t disturb.
A silence that settles in.
A unique atmosphere
You walk without really speaking.
As if the place itself sets the pace.
The stones are worn, but solid.
The narrow streets, yet open to something larger.
And with every step, a strange feeling:
you are not a visitor… but a guest.
Lubenice is not abandoned.
It is simply… elsewhere.
A legend of forbidden love
It is said that an impossible love story was born here.
The daughter of the king of Osor fell in love with a young man from the village.
A love that power refused to accept.
So only the stones remain.
And what they silently hold.
A breathtaking panorama
In front of you, the Adriatic stretches endlessly.
Nothing truly breaks the horizon.
Just the sea, the sky… and sometimes, in the distance, Istria appearing like a mirage.
The hidden beach below
And far below…
An almost unreal beach.
As if placed there, far from everything.
Accessible… but never given.
Going down is easy.
Coming back up… that’s another story.
A place to be earned
Lubenice is not a convenient place.
It is a place you earn.
A place where you slow down without thinking.
Where you look differently.
Where you simply feel.
👉 And you… would you go all the way down… knowing you’ll have to climb back up? 🙂
