Kuterevo, facing the bears of Velebit

🧭 INTRO

I thought I would simply catch a glimpse of a bear…
a quick, almost casual stop along the road.
And then time slowed down.
I stood there, motionless, listening to the silence…
watching something far more powerful than I expected.

In Kuterevo, at the foot of the Velebit mountains, you don’t just come to see animals.
You step into a place where you feel a presence, almost invisible…
a piece of nature that still exists without trying to impress anyone.

🐻 The moment you realize this is not a zoo

The silence is complete.
No crowd, no noise, no familiar reference points.
Just the wind, a few branches… and you.

And then, they appear.

Two bears, just a few meters away.
They move slowly, without even really looking at you,
as if you were nothing more than a detail in their world.

And suddenly, without warning, you understand: 👉 this is not a zoo.
👉 you are in their world.

Nothing is staged.
Nothing is meant for you.
Just a raw, simple encounter… almost unsettling in its honesty.

🌿 The Kuterevo sanctuary

The Kuterevo refuge was created in 1995 with a simple but essential idea: to protect the wild nature of the Velebit mountains and give orphaned bear cubs a second chance.

Since 2002, it has been open to visitors, but it has never lost its soul.
More than 20,000 people come here every year…
and yet, the place remains quiet, almost disconnected from the world.

The bears living here cannot return to the wild.
So they are not displayed…
they are simply given a space to live, as close as possible to their natural environment.

🤝 A human story above all

Behind the bears, there are people.

Since 2005, volunteers from all over the world have been part of this project.
Travelers passing through, nature lovers, long-term volunteers…

Life in Kuterevo is simple.
Comfort is minimal, but that’s not the point.
It’s about sharing, meeting others, and feeling part of something real.

Some stay a few days, others for months… sometimes years.
But they all leave with the same thing:
a rare human experience, hard to describe.

📍 Practical information

• Location: Kuterevo, at the foot of Velebit, about 80 km from Plitvice Lakes
• Opening: spring, summer and autumn (closed in winter — hibernation)
• Visit: free
• Tip: come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the place is quieter

The sanctuary runs on donations and small souvenir sales.
Nothing is required… but everything helps.
