Lungomare — walking between sea, light and time

Between Volosko and Lovran, the Lungomare is not something you describe… it is something you feel. A walk suspended between sea, light and silence.

There are paths we follow…
and others that walk with us.

The Lungomare belongs to the latter.

More than 12 kilometers between Volosko and Lovran…
but here, it is not a distance you cover.
It is a moment you move through.

From the very first steps in Volosko, something shifts.

The air carries a blend of salt, warm stone and the gentle awakening of kitchens.
Boats sway slowly, almost silently…
and the soft sound of water against the harbor sets the rhythm.

You are not really walking yet.
You are settling in.

Then the path opens…
and the light arrives.

The sun filters through the pines, casting moving shadows on the ground.
Each step alternates between warmth and freshness…
like breathing.

The villas appear, discreet yet imposing.
Pastel facades, wrought iron balconies, half-closed shutters…
as if they still observe the passing of time.

Here and there, an open gate reveals a forgotten garden.
Steps lead down to the sea…
and for a moment, you wonder who walked here before you.

The sea never truly leaves your sight.

It comes close, almost within reach.
You hear the water gently hitting the stone, in a steady… almost soothing rhythm.
Then it disappears behind a rock, a pine, a curve…
only to return, always different.

You pass small marinas, wooden pontoons, stretched ropes…
and boats that seem to be waiting too.

And then Opatija appears, without interruption.

A little more life, a few voices, glasses clinking on terraces…
but never disturbing.
Here, even the liveliness remains gentle.

Your gaze is drawn to the horizon…
and suddenly, she is there.

The Maiden with the Seagull.

Alone on her rock, facing the open sea, still against the wind…
she seems to be waiting.
Or perhaps simply watching, like us.

You slow down.
You stop often.

Not to take a picture…
but because the moment calls for silence.

Then the path continues.

Your steps become more regular, almost automatic.
The sound of footsteps on stone, your breathing, the wind…
everything aligns.

Sometimes, a staircase leads down to a hidden cove.
The water is clearer, calmer…
and time seems suspended.

Elsewhere, a simple bench facing the sea is enough.
You sit “just for two minutes”…
and stay longer than expected.

The scents shift slightly.
Pine, sea, sometimes a hint of sunscreen…
subtle details, yet very present.

As you move toward Lovran, something softens even more.

Fewer people, more space…
the silence becomes almost tangible.

You hear more of the sea than your steps.
More of the wind than voices.

And without really knowing when…
you realize you are no longer looking around.

You feel.

The Lungomare never truly ends.
It simply settles within you.

Like a light, almost invisible sensation…
that stays long after.

And you…
👉 would you walk to see… or to feel ?
