Cres out of time: between forgotten roads, silent villages and wild cliffs

Crossing over… and already starting to let go

It all begins gently.

On the ferry.

To reach Cres by car, there is no bridge. You arrive by sea, either from Valbiska on the island of Krk to Merag, or from Brestova in Istria to Porozina. These are the island’s two main gateways, and that crossing alone already changes the rhythm of the journey. As schedules vary with the season, it is always best to check the crossing before setting off.

There is something special about that passage. The sound of the engine, the water gliding by, the coast drifting away in silence… and already that strange feeling: leaving behind a hurried world and entering another one, slower, more mineral, more secret.

Not there yet… but already somewhere else.

Three villages, three moods… one day on Cres

There are days when you simply tick places off on a map.

And then there are days when the road itself becomes the experience.

That day, the idea was simple: head north across Cres, discover a few perched villages, feel the island, look at it more closely… and perhaps catch sight of the famous vultures.

Spoiler: as far as the vultures were concerned, it would be for another time.

But in the end, that was not what made the day memorable.

Beli – charm that has to be earned

The last few kilometres set the tone.

The road narrows, twists, almost hesitates between being a road and a confession. Meeting another car becomes a small event. You slow down, measure the situation, breathe a little less deeply… and then keep going.

And then Beli appears.

A village clinging to the rock, facing the sea, with that rare blend of harshness and grace. Old houses, roofs pressed close together, cobbled lanes, stones polished by the years… and that silence.

A full silence. Not an empty one.

It was an instant favourite.

Beli does not try to seduce. It does not need to.

But very quickly another thought takes hold: living here cannot be easy every single day. The car stays below, and the groceries end with a walk on old uneven cobblestones. In dry weather, it can be done. In the rain, it must become a far more serious business.

Beli is magnificent. But you have to earn it a little.

And that may be exactly why it has kept so much soul.

Filozići – calm… and surprise

A few more kilometres. Another narrow road.

Filozići does not spark the same immediate feeling.

The village is more discreet, more withdrawn, almost folded in on itself. Out of season, it seems asleep. The artisans’ workshops are closed, the doors stay shut, and the place feels as though it is waiting for better days.

And yet… sometimes it only takes almost nothing.

A dog barks. Someone comes out. A conversation begins.

Simple. Natural. The kind of small moment that would mean nothing in a tourist brochure, yet stays with you far longer than a beautiful picture.

Here, another striking detail: horses roaming free. They wander calmly through the village as if they were its true inhabitants. It is unexpected, almost charming… as long as you keep an eye on where you are putting your feet.

Filozići may not have tried to win me over. But it still had something to tell.

Predošćica – raw and wild

Last stop.

This time, it is hardly even a road anymore. It is a passage. A narrow, uneven dirt track, with just enough room for one car to get through… and barely three spots where crossing another vehicle would not turn into a small diplomatic negotiation.

As soon as you arrive, the tone changes again.

The village is not really my style. The renovated houses have sometimes lost part of the soul I like to find in places like this. But thankfully, not everything has disappeared: the old stone walls, the unpaved paths, that feeling of being somewhere apart, slightly on the margins.

And here, you are never really alone.

Sheep are everywhere. They almost accompany the visit, calm, present, indifferent and yet perfectly in place. It feels less like entering a village than stepping into a shared territory.

Then you move a little further on.

And suddenly, the landscape opens up.

The cliffs. The sea. The void.

A spectacular view, wild and powerful. The kind of place where you lower your voice without even thinking about it.

It may not have been the village that touched me most. But the setting leaves an immediate mark.

A day without vultures… but not without emotion

At first, there was the idea of spotting vultures.

In the end, not a single one in the sky. Not one photo. Not even a distant silhouette to save the day’s ornithological honour.

And yet, I did not feel as though I had come back empty-handed.

Because in the end, what remains are not the things we set out to find. More often, they are the things we never planned for:

  • Beli, the favourite, with its rough charm and worn cobblestones;
  • Filozići, more discreet, almost closed-off, yet crossed by one small true moment;
  • Predošćica, less appealing at first glance, but opening onto raw and spectacular nature.

Cres does not reveal itself all at once.

It forces you to slow down. To look. To accept as well that not everything has to be perfect, easy or instantly seductive.

And that is probably why it stays with you.

And you, do you prefer villages full of soul like Beli… or wilder, almost austere landscapes that have to be earned a little more?
